Hello, and welcome to Wikipedia from a neighbour (I live at St Clair, so you're not the only Dunedinite here!).

I hope you like Wikipedia and decide to stay. Here are a few good links for newcomers:

Okay, I've conducted a cursory search on "International dollar", and I can't find a single external reference to this anywhere, and there are none in the article itself. I suspect original research. Cites, please? --Calton 00:53, 13 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Reversion of vandalism to European Union

[edit]

Hey, no problem. I hate vandals just as much as the next guy, so I revert them when and where I see them. Incidentally, this particular vandal appears to either be associated with a weird guy called Sollog or is perhaps the crazy kook himself. For details take a look at the Slashdot article on Sollogs' edit war with Wikipedia. It's the first time I've reverted any of the stuff related to this particular dispute though. Impi 22:18, 19 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Thank you for the links. They were interesting. Scott Gall 04:16, 23 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Scott, you left a message for me about blanking pages. I wasn't blanking pages, I was merging a number of articles together. I think the larger article that was the target of the merge was "Decision model." 68.88.233.11 08:17, 30 Dec 2004 (UTC)

You really think cats have magical powers? RickK 06:50, Feb 18, 2005 (UTC)
Yeah, I have to wonder what on earth you were thinking when you voted keep for the obvious vandalism article? Your pic above says "watch out vandals" and here you encouraged one. Poor form. DreamGuy 02:57, Feb 20, 2005 (UTC)

Sorry about that. The article did have some elements of truth. I think vandals might be good for something (even if it's just reverting their own defacements of Wikipedia, which would be quite unlikely,) but I seriously doubt it. Scott Gall 04:02, 23 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Gdansk

[edit]

Your vote and comments seem to be a bit confused. 1793 was the year it was annexed by Prussia, a German speaking state. The change to "Gdansk" happened in 1945, after World War II. Voting to call it Danzig from 1466 to 1793, when it was a largely German-speaking city in Poland, and to call it Gdansk from 1793 to 1945, when it was a largely German-speaking city in Prussia and a largely German-speaking free city, doesn't make very much sense. john k 14:38, 18 Feb 2005 (UTC)

It's a wiki

[edit]

And please don't edit this page, because an administrator will be on you very quickly. All edits to this page which are not mine, except for the awarding of barnstars, are vandalism.

This is actually untrue. An edit may be made to a user page without being vandalism, for example, fixing a spelling mistake. As for getting administrators on a user who edits your user page while not vandalising it, I fail to see what they would be punished for doing, exactly. You can freely ask users not to edit your user page, but it's probably best not to threaten them. - Vague | Rant 11:06, Feb 25, 2005 (UTC)

OK then. I'll fix it up. After all, that's the whole point of a wiki, isn't it? Scott Gall 20:42, 25 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Vague has a good point. By definition:

"The malicious and intentional destruction or defacing of property." Google

Any edit consisting of a comment, critisism, suggesting, etc... fails to fall in that category. On another topic, I, as many others most likely, may find many of your statements disturbing. I agree everyone has the right to their opinion, but so many on the first impression? I'm sure you mean no harm by any of it, as it's how you view the world with your personal experiences.

  • Your potato comment: *Laugh* That's funny!
  • By the way, Jews, not blacks, were the major target of Hitler.
    • So that's why Anne Frank was taken to a concentration camp, despite being a white. Scott Gall
  • Same language requirement: Talk about destruction of culture. There's conflict in your statements.
    • I'm thinking about taking over my own country and using a constructed language (in this case, Esperanto) as official. Scott Gall
  • Circumcision: Touchy subject, considering I'm Jewish. I'll agree with you as far as to say it should NOT be done for cosmetic purposes. Circumcision is like cutting off an infants fingers due to "future under finger-nail dirt."
    • I was going to make religious circumcision illegal but I won't now. I shouldn't be holding other peoples' religions against them. Scott Gall
  • Schools have not only the right to ban offensive things, but the responsibility to do so. School is for education, not "making a statement".
  • A good admin (person) follows rules. Disagreement does not justify breaking of a rule. The correct route is to campaign for it's change.
    • Hence all the admins doing their own thing (and having everyone else do admins' work.) I still think admins should keep to their commitments to Wikipedia. :) Scott Gall 06:31, 4 Mar 2005 (UTC)
  • "My personal hate list [includes] The owners of competing wikis..." In a prior statement you said:
"13. I will have my own English-language wiki-based encyclopedia. And it will be better than Wikipedia ..."

I'll be surprised if this doesn't get deleted. Think: Constructive Criticism. I'm sorry you had to go through spinal meningitis, I did the same in fall of 1992 (at 23 years old). May an entity of your choosing, bless you in ways you desire.

Your User pages

[edit]

Hi; I suggest you have a read through Wikipedia:User pages. As User:Vague Rant has indicated above, you come on too strong with your threats about people editing your User Page. I'd also encourage you to avoid making pages like User:Scott Gall/Gays are Wrong. This subpage is, of course, unrelated to writing an encyclopedia, but much more importantly, it would be very likely to offend others in the Wikipedia community — your page moves beyond personal opinion into hate speech, and I, for one, find it objectionable. I hope it's just a bad-taste joke. — Matt Crypto 18:30, 25 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Oh dear. I'm off to fix that up. Scott Gall 20:45, 25 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Hiya. You really ought to clear up your user space a bit more. The servers are giving CPU time and storage space for an encyclopedia, not a collection of opinion pieces. Spend more time editing the article namespace. r3m0t talk 06:20, Jun 6, 2005 (UTC)

There's this place on Wikicities called Scratchpad. If more people comment on my overcrowded userspace, I'll consider moving my museum of vandalism over there. Scott Gall 09:17, 2005 Jun 6 (UTC) PS: You'd better keep an eye open, because I hear that some idiot pretending to be a university lecturer is getting all the New Zealand Wikipedians together for a huge vandalism bomb on Wikipedia Day, 2006. I definitely won't be doing that, and if I'm an admin by then, there will be a 36-hour block for anybody that I catch vandalising on Wikipedia Day (48 if they mess up my user space.)

Hi. Your Wikipedia:Requests for adminship/Scott Gall seems not to go through this time. Just as a note, you can retract your self nomination anytime, e.g. if the chances of passing are slim and you don't feel good about accumulating too many rejections. Personally I think that you have not yet enough experience on Wikipedia, and you should try again later when you have more experience/edits. Üserbøxen

[edit]

The møøse wishes you welcome, and encourages you to utilize the red links on the Non ISO languages page to make lots and lots of userboxes called "yasm-x" (where YaSm stands for...well...you can guess, because I can't spell, and x stands for 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and n). One day I might get around to making a "Welcome to Üserbøxen" template or something, but for now...welcome to Üserbøxen. I have heard the term 'Home Nations'.

[edit]

Scott, I have heard the term 'Home Nations' used in association with the recent Grand Slam rugby tour by the All Blacks to the British Isles.I have not heard it used anywhere else. - (Aidan Work 08:40, 30 December 2005 (UTC))[reply]

  • I had heard it a few times, especially during the Grand Slam tour, the most recent of which we won. Don't get your hopes up about next year because although we've only beaten all four Home Nations twice (the other one being in 1978,) there's a good chance we could do it a third time. Scott Gall 09:21, 31 December 2005 (UTC) PS: I've noticed a strange pattern - New Zealand only gets the Grand Slam in the same year as a Papal conclave, and the last four conclaves have all happened in the same year as a general election.[reply]

Hello

Hi there, I was going to fix up some spelling, but I decided against it as I'd of been tempted to help out with your user boxes too. You seems to have a few that contradict each other which is odd to say the least, and at least a couple repeat, do you want them repetition removed ? I saw you were diagnosed with AS, I was too, but not until I had left a few schools in my late teens, unfortunately. I am currently studying in Wanaka, New Zealand and was wondering if you wanted to talk some time. Also, should I fix the user boxes that repeat, what about the contradictions ? samh004 05:59, 17 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Orphaned non-free media (Image:Showimage.jpg)

[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Showimage.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BetacommandBot 18:34, 10 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Disputed fair use rationale for Image:Millennium tenner.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Millennium tenner.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale you have provided for using this image under "fair use" may be invalid. Please read the instructions at Wikipedia:Non-free content carefully, then go to the image description page and clarify why you think the image qualifies for fair use. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it will be deleted within a couple of days according to our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot (talk) 17:04, 2 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

AfD nomination of Potato (word)

[edit]

An editor has nominated one or more articles which you have created or worked on, for deletion. The nominated article is Potato (word). We appreciate your contributions, but the nominator doesn't believe that the article satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion and has explained why in his/her nomination (see also Wikipedia:Notability and "What Wikipedia is not").

Your opinions on whether the article meets inclusion criteria and what should be done with the article are welcome; please participate in the discussion(s) by adding your comments to Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Potato (word). Please be sure to sign your comments with four tildes (~~~~).

You may also edit the article during the discussion to improve it but should not remove the articles for deletion template from the top of the article; such removal will not end the deletion debate.

Unreferenced BLPs

Hello Scott Gall! Thank you for your contributions. I am a bot alerting you that 2 of the articles that you created are tagged as Unreferenced Biographies of Living Persons. The biographies of living persons policy requires that all personal or potentially controversial information be sourced. In addition, to ensure verifiability, all biographies should be based on reliable sources. If you were to bring these articles up to standards, it would greatly help us with the current 3 article backlog. Once the articles are adequately referenced, please remove the {{unreferencedBLP}} tag. Here is the list:

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Bare-chested requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A11 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about something invented/coined/discovered by the article's creator or someone they know personally, and it does not indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator. While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.
